Collie will host 41 volleyball teams next month for the 30th annual Collie Coal Cup.
Coal Cup is the only regional volleyball tournament of its kind in WA and has grown in popularity every year, with registrations filling weeks out from the event.
The tournament attracts 300 players, as well as supporters and spectators, so provides a good boost to the Collie economy over the weekend.
Collie is fielding a women’s and men’s team and welcome spectators to come cheer on the local teams.
The men’s team will be hoping for a hat-trick this year after winning the men’s B grade competition the past two years in a row.
Teams travel from as far as Busselton, Perth, Albany, Bunbury and Esperance to compete in the tournament.
As well as competing in their prospective grades, teams also aim to win the coveted Coal Cup, which is awarded on performance, sportsmanship, appearance, commitment to umpiring duties and participation in the right spirit of the game.
Coal Cup also supports community organisations, with Wilson Park Primary School P and C providing the catering for the tournament.
The tournament will be held at Roche Park Recreation Centre on August 3 and 4.
